Jack Kemp Michigan Build to Construct 180 Houses
Americus, Ga. - May 26, 1999 - Jack Kemp, former HUD secretary, will join Habitat for Humanity volunteers from across the state of Michigan in June and July to hammer away at poverty housing. The Jack Kemp Michigan Build will construct 180 simple, decent, affordable houses.
"Habitat for Humanity is doing outstanding work across America and around the world to make the dream of homeownership a reality," Kemp said. "Habitat brings families, businesses and communities together, working to eliminate inadequate housing."
Kemp will kick off the Michigan build June 10 with Habitat for Humanity of North Oakland. Sixty Habitat affiliates will be part of the Jack Kemp Michigan Build.
"These houses will give hope for a better future and create communities where parents will have a chance to provide stable background for their children," said Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International.
Habitat for Humanity's Michigan Prison Program, created to help teach prisoners a trade, also will contribute to this enormous project. Prisoners will prefabricate exterior and interior walls to be used in the building of 67 houses. The prefabricated walls also will allow the houses to be built more quickly.
Each homeowner must contribute between 300 and 500 hours on the construction on their house and other Habitat houses. The houses are sold to those in need at no profit, through no-interest loans.
