Late Shuttle Commander to Be Honored on Father’s Day

Amarillo, Texas, May 27, 2003–As one family makes plans to celebrate their new Habitat for Humanity home, a congregation is pulling out the stops to honor a fallen hero on Father’s Day. First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, Texas, is planning to build a home over a mere 7 days with Habitat for Humanity volunteers as a tribute to the fallen commander of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The new home, built in honor of Commander Rick Husband, will be dedicated on June 15th with Husband’s widow in attendance.

“Our family is honored that the church is building a home to remember Rick,” said Husband’s widow Evelyn. “Being a Christian and being a father were two of the most important things in Rick’s life. Dedicating this Habitat for Humanity home on Father’s day is a poignant tribute to Rick.”

Husband was a dedicated member of the Amarillo congregation and was often a featured soloist in the church choir. First Presbyterian Church chose the idea of a Habitat “one week blitz build” as a fitting tribute to their fallen friend.

“We wanted to honor Rick by doing what he always did: demonstrating Christ’s love to others in practical ways,” said First Presbyterian’s Associate Pastor, Murray Gossett. “Habitat for Humanity is a perfect partner to help us do just that.”

“Habitat for Humanity will remember Rick Husband as we build this home with a family in need,” said Millard Fuller, president and founder of Habitat for Humanity International. “We hope this Habitat home will inspire others to put their faith into action. I am impressed and grateful that Amarillo Habitat for Humanity is honoring the memory of Rick Husband in this beautiful way.”

First Presbyterian has pledged $30,000 towards the cost of the build and church members will be providing volunteer labor to build what will become the home of Amarillo couple Jimmy and Cheryl Byrd.
