GMAC Mortgage Sponsors Habitat for Humanity Women Build Event in Pontiac With 160 Women Volunteers

TROY, Mich., May 31, 2003 – 160 women from General Motors, GMAC Financial Services and GMAC Mortgage will volunteer their time today to build a Habitat house alongside Jacqueline Nixon as part of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Program. The Habitat Build is located on 203 Rockwell Street in Pontiac, Mich., where four other Habitat homes have been built.

Jacqueline and her son currently rent a home in a neighborhood she has seen go from bad to worse. She currently shares her neighborhood with drug dealers and gangs and looks forward to a better life for her family. “Thank you General Motors and GMAC Mortgage for helping me make my new home a reality. I’m so grateful for all of your help and support,” she said. In addition to providing volunteers, General Motors and GMAC are sponsoring the Habitat house.

Volunteers will also landscape and clean up several Habitat lots in the area. GMAC Mortgage will donate $100 to Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County for each female employee who volunteers at the May 31 Build.

“GMAC Mortgage has a lot of female employees who are active members of the community and women are a big part of the volunteerism spirit in the company,” said Carol Johnson, senior managing director of community relations of GMAC Mortgage. “In the month of Mother’s Day, the women at GMAC Mortgage have decided to celebrate May and the women spirit by volunteering in the community we work and live.”

The Pontiac build is one of six Habitat for Humanity Women Build Days sponsored by GMAC Mortgage this month. Other builds were held in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Iowa.

Women Build is a program of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Women volunteers come together from all walks of life to swing hammers and raise roofs, actively participating in the solution for poverty housing– one family and one house at a time. Since 1991, women crews have built more than 450 Habitat houses throughout the United States.

“GMAC Mortgage shares the vision of affordable housing with Habitat for Humanity and our partnership with Habitat is a way of making homeownership a dream come true for everyone,” said Johnson.
