Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Dedicates Global Village & Discovery Center

AMERICUS, Ga., June 2, 2003 – Habitat for Humanity International’s Global Village & Discovery Center’s grand opening celebration on Saturday, June 7, at 9 a.m. (EDT) will offer a mixture of cultural events and notable speakers along with international music, dance and food. Headlining the lineup of entertainment for the Village’s grand opening is the African Dance Connection dance troupe from the Atlanta Dance Theatre. The eight-member group of dancers and drummers will take to the stage for two performances at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The dance troupe will also lead a processional of guests to the house blessings of the Village’s new Zambian and South African Habitat houses.

The celebration will feature an international food court offering cuisine such as Mexican and Indian fare. Guests can partake of interactive activities such as brick and tile making and stop by a visitor’s center that showcases the inspiring work of Habitat volunteers and partner families around the globe. The SAM Shortline Excursion Train Depot, located next door to the Village, will be offering transportation to tourist attractions in Plains and Cordele.

A grand opening dedication will take place at 1 p.m. to commemorate the Global Village & Discovery Center. Honored speakers will include former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Founder and President of Habitat for Humanity International Millard Fuller, former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda and Mambo Mkhize, whose Habitat home was built by President Carter last year during the JCWP 2002.

Grand Opening Activities

• 9 a.m. Global Village & Discovery Center opens to the public

• 11 a.m. African Dance Connection performs at the main stage

• 11:30 a.m. House blessing of Zambian and South African Habitat home

• 1 p.m. Grand opening dedication with President Carter at main stage

• 2 p.m. African Dance Connection performs at the main stage

• Dusk Global Village & Discovery Center closes for the day
