Company donates 100,000th custom window covering
UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. – Hunter Douglas Window Fashions has supported Habitat for Humanity® International for the past 11 years, supplying custom window coverings for the privacy rooms of every Habitat for Humanity house built in the United States and Canada. In June, the company and Habitat celebrated a milestone – the 100,000th Hunter Douglas window covering to be installed in a Habitat home.
The blinds went into the new Paterson, N.J., home of Kimino Rutherford. In addition to Ms. Rutherford, Jose “Joey” Torres, mayor of Paterson; Barbara Dunn, executive director of Paterson Habitat for Humanity; Joe Jankoski, corporate vice president of Merchandising for Hunter Douglas; and Steve Casale, vice president and controller of the Hunter Douglas Window Covering Division were on hand to witness the milestone.
“Habitat is committed to providing simple, decent, affordable housing for those who have endured sub-standard housing, and we at Hunter Douglas are proud to have supported that commitment for over a decade, and we will continue to support it,” said Jankoski.
Hunter Douglas, the nation’s leading manufacturer and marketer of custom window coverings, became a national sponsor of Habitat for Humanity in 1993 with the intention of providing custom window coverings to the privacy rooms of every Habitat house built in the United States and Canada. To date, Hunter Douglas has covered 100,000 windows in more than 20,000 homes.
The Hunter Douglas commitment extends to the grass-roots level as well. Many Hunter Douglas employees serve as volunteers and administrators with Habitat affiliates and participate in annual workdays, such as the recent one in Paterson.
“The partnership between Hunter Douglas and Habitat for Humanity has helped hundreds of thousands of people across the country and in Canada achieve the dream of homeownership,” said Sybil Carter, director of corporate sponsors for Habitat for Humanity International. “Habitat could not fulfill its mission without the sponsorship of Hunter Douglas and companies like it who make community support a priority.”
In the United States, the wages of low-income families have not kept pace with rising rents and mortgage requirements, while at the same time many low-cost housing units have either been abandoned and demolished or converted into high-cost units. According to the Low Income Housing Information Service, “There are three main reasons for the affordable housing crisis in America: the rise in home construction pricing, the decrease in wages and the loss of millions of affordable apartments during the past 20 years.”
