Spencer Stuart to aid Habitat in CEO search
Habitat for Humanity selects Spencer Stuart to help find new leadership
AMERICUS, Ga. (Jan. 25, 2004) – Habitat for Humanity has selected Spencer Stuart, one of the oldest and largest executive recruiting organizations around the world, to help find its new chief executive officer. Habitat’s international board of directors is hoping to appoint a new president and CEO by June 2006.
Paul Leonard, a former Presbyterian minister, home-building executive and board chair, is serving as the interim chief executive officer for the world’s largest nonprofit homebuilder. He assumed the responsibilities in October when Habitat founder Millard Fuller moved into a new role as founder president.
Spencer Stuart, founded in 1956, specializes in finding top-level executives and board directors. Spencer Stuart consultants Sally Sterling and Susan Boren will lead the search for Habitat for Humanity’s next generation of leadership. Sterling and Boren will work closely with Habitat board members Kathleen Bader, chair, president and CEO of Cargill Dow LLC, The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., and Larry Prible, retired chair, president and CEO, Indianapolis Life Insurance Co., Indianapolis, Ind.
Former President and longtime Habitat volunteer Jimmy Carter is serving as honorary chair of the search committee, which will also include an international group of current and former board members as well as representatives from the Habitat for Humanity affiliate community.
“We are delighted to have so professional an executive search firm aiding us in this effort,” said Prible. “Habitat is unlike anything else I know of, and the search for new leadership must reflect the values and Christian principles that we hold so dear.
“In researching Spencer Stuart, it was clear that its consultants take their responsibilities very seriously, that they hold to a code of professional ethics with an emphasis on honesty and integrity and that they will handle our relationships with great care.”
