AMERICUS, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2006) – Habitat for Humanity International has named Paige Hemmis of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to be the national spokesperson for its 2006 Home Builders Blitz ( The blitz is scheduled for the week of June 5, with more than 500 homes to be built from start to finish that week in communities throughout the United States.

The Builders Blitz was started in 2002 by a professional home builder in Raleigh, N.C., who supported Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to eliminate poverty housing in his community. Tom Gipson rallied other local builders for an accelerated build. Over the past three years they have built 36 homes in their area. The Raleigh builders conceived the nationwide event to help more families and presented the idea for the Home Builders Blitz to Habitat for Humanity International.

“Paige Hemmis exemplifies the giving spirit of this event and is a perfect spokesperson to help us rally builders throughout the country,” said Kevin Campbell, director of the Builders Blitz 2006. “Together with Paige’s help, we believe we will create hope for thousands of people more quickly than ever.”

Hemmis began working with Habitat for Humanity in 2004 as a spokesperson for the Greater Los Angeles Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Since then, Hemmis has helped raise awareness and support for many programs throughout the world. In January, she appeared at the International Builders Show in Orlando to promote the Home Builders Blitz and has filmed a public service announcement currently being distributed to builders around the country.

“I am honored to be part of a movement that began with one builder’s big idea,” said Hemmis. “Every day I see how much of a difference one person can make to a family; however, the builders who are a part of this blitz will change the lives of thousands of people they don’t even know – that is truly remarkable.”
