Habitat for Humanity International locates administrative headquarters in downtown Atlanta

ATLANTA (April 19, 2006) – Habitat for Humanity International will locate its new administrative headquarters in downtown Atlanta, joining a cluster of international nonprofits that call Atlanta home.

“While our operational headquarters will remain in Americus, Ga., where Habitat for Humanity was founded and has flourished, we are thrilled today to announce the establishment of administrative headquarters in downtown Atlanta, a world-class city with world-class services essential to a growing, global organization,” said Habitat Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Reckford. “With our administrative offices here, we will have improved access to peer organizations, partners, skills and services, as well as to other Habitat for Humanity International offices in Washington, D.C., and other locations around the United States; San Jose, Costa Rica; Budapest, Hungary; Bangkok, Thailand; and Pretoria, South Africa.”

The organization’s administrative headquarters will occupy 27,632 square feet of leased space at 270 Peachtree St. The new office is expected to open by Aug. 1.

Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin said Habitat’s decision to locate in Atlanta is particularly gratifying since affordable housing is one of her administration’s top priorities.

“This announcement brings the City of Atlanta one step closer to accomplishing the goals set forth in the New Century Economic Development Plan to create 10,000 new affordable housing units by 2009,” Franklin said. “We are delighted to have Habitat in the City of Atlanta as they help families achieve their dreams of home ownership.”

Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce President Sam A. Williams said Atlanta is an excellent choice for Habitat because of its international airport, the city’s dedication to affordable housing and the outstanding research universities here that can partner with Habitat.

“Atlanta will give Habitat a home base that’s connected to the world and a hometown that strongly supports its critical work,” said Williams.

The organization joins a long list of nonprofits that have chosen Atlanta for headquarters operations. The Arthritis Foundation moved to Atlanta in 1977; the American Cancer Society in 1987; CARE in 1993; and Boys and Girls Clubs of America in 1994.

“Over the years, Downtown Atlanta has built a solid foundation of non-profit organizations that are strong, productive and caring entities that enrich our community. Habitat for Humanity’s mission fits perfectly into and with the mission of the City, and especially Downtown Atlanta. They are a perfect neighbor,” said A.J. Robinson, president of Central Atlanta Progress Inc.

“Having operational headquarters in Americus and administrative headquarters in Atlanta is a long-term approach for achieving the dramatic growth envisioned in Habitat’s strategic plan,” said Reckford. “While Atlanta as an administrative headquarters offers more immediate access to transportation, specialized skills and services, Americus as an operational hub offers the economy of established offices and access to an experienced Habitat workforce. This plan is one that allows us to honor our past and our ongoing dedication to South Georgia, while positioning us for an even stronger future as a more collaborative global organization.”
