General Mills Foundation gives $200,000 to launch new Habitat for Humanity student building project in the Gulf Coast
AMERICUS, Ga. (July 10, 2006) – The General Mills Foundation and Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Programs department will launch the General Mills Gulf Coast Student Building project. General Mills has contributed $200,000 to the project that allows students to spend seven to 10 days as a part of a team working with Operation Home Delivery, Habitat for Humanity’s hurricane recovery program.
Trips will include a week of building Habitat houses in partnership with hurricane-affected families in the Gulf Coast while learning about poverty housing in the area and what students can do to make a positive and long-lasting difference.
“General Mills and Habitat share the goal of engaging young people in community development projects and empowering them as leaders today and tomorrow,” said Ellen Luger, executive director of the General Mills Foundation. “Both organizations see young people as an integral part of society with a true capacity for positive change. Through this program, General Mills and Habitat for Humanity ultimately seek to make the world a better place by improving communities.”
As part of the program, General Mills will provide the opportunity for three groups of 25 young people, ages 18-25, to join together with Habitat for Humanity to help build simple, decent and affordable housing in the Gulf Coast.
“This project will encourage the participants, as active and responsible citizens, to take up the challenge of eliminating substandard housing in communities,” said Desiree Adaway, director of Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Programs. “The students will also participate in workshops conducted by Habitat where they will learn about poverty housing and how they can make a difference in their communities as young leaders.”
Trips will begin in July and continue through March 2007. For more information about the General Mills Gulf Coast Student Building Project, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
