Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio reach agreement to continue affordable housing partnership

ATLANTA and SAN ANTONIO (July 4, 2008) – Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio have reached an agreement to continue working together in their efforts to make affordable housing possible. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has signed the U.S. Affiliation Agreement and will remain a valued affiliate.

“We are pleased that Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio will continue its work in Bexar County as part of the worldwide organization,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “As Habitat’s first affiliate, Habitat San Antonio is a leader in providing housing in partnership with low-income families.”

The signing of the U.S. Affiliation Agreement resolves a lawsuit filed by Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio regarding use of the “Habitat for Humanity” name. As part of the settlement, Habitat for Humanity International retains all rights to the organization’s name and identifiers. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has been recognized as an affiliate in good standing and will retain its status as an independent organization. Although there are no current plans to amend the U.S. Affiliation Agreement, the San Antonio affiliate would be exempt from any changes made to the U.S. Affiliation Agreement for a period of three years. Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio have also worked out a pre-established transition agreement in the event that the affiliate decides to pursue its work under a different name in the future.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement which allows us to resolve our differences, retain our independence, and protect our assets” said Rene Diaz, Chairman of the Board of Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio. “We look forward to continuing our association with Habitat for Humanity International.”
