Hundreds of youth attend Habitat for Humanity conference in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (November 7, 2008) — More than 250 youth will meet in St. Louis November 7–9 for the second annual Habitat for Humanity Youth Leadership Conference to celebrate their contributions to providing safe, decent and affordable homes. Each year, thousands of Habitat for Humanity youth volunteers play a vital role in Habitat’s goal to eliminate poverty housing by raising funds, raising awareness and raising roofs.

The conference attendees are involved with Habitat’s youth programs, which engage youth, ages 5 to 25, in Habitat’s work to eliminate poverty housing. The youth volunteers will attend a variety of workshops designed to help them with their building, fund-raising, education and advocacy initiatives in the coming year. Workshop topics range from “green” building to recruiting group members to impacting legislation that affects the availability of affordable housing.

“The conference allows our youth volunteers to network and share best practices in their common goal to help eliminate poverty housing,” said Desiree Adaway, Habitat’s director of Volunteer Mobilization. “Our youth volunteers, who work in their local communities and even travel to new communities, are the future builders and leaders of affordable housing.”

Several Habitat groups will be recognized for their work during an awards banquet hosted by Habitat for Humanity International and State Farm, the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Programs department.
