Young people sponsor and build Habitat for Humanity houses

ATLANTA (March 10, 2009) – Youth across the country are raising walls and funds to build Habitat for Humanity homes. It’s all part of Youth United, a Habitat for Humanity house-building initiative designed for youth.

Through Youth United, students ages 5 to 25 work together to fund and build houses in their own community. The students are responsible for raising at least 70 percent of the house sponsorship costs, and those over 16 help with construction.

“Youth United serves not only as a chance for young people to learn about poverty and substandard housing; it also gives them an opportunity to do something about it,” says Desiree Adaway, Habitat’s senior director of Volunteer Mobilization. “The program helps them realize the power they have as individuals.”

Since the program began in 2002, more than 100 Habitat houses have been built through Youth United, and more than 100 Habitat affiliates have participated in the program. Currently, there are more than 70 active Youth United groups.

State Farm® is the national corporate sponsor of Habitat’s youth programs and has provided more than $160,000 to support several Youth United groups in their outstanding work with the program. Overall, State Farm has contributed more than $1.5 million in grants each year to Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat affiliates since 2007.
