Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan universities receive top Habitat award

ATLANTA (Sept. 23, 2010) – Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan universities have been selected as the joint recipients of Habitat for Humanity’s Campus Chapter of the Year Award. Bestowed annually, this award honors exceptional Habitat campus chapters for their work to make safe, decent and affordable housing possible.

“We congratulate Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan universities and the other campus chapter finalists for their efforts to make affordable housing possible,” said Cody Logsdon, volunteer engagement manager, Habitat for Humanity International. “We truly appreciate the commitment and service of each of the 500 Habitat campus chapters across the country. Their work is making a difference in the lives of so many families.”

Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan universities volunteer with Habitat for Humanity McLean County and were chosen because of the creative partnership they formed to increase their impact in their community. Working most Saturdays during the year, the campus chapters have built 17 houses.

Habitat campus chapters are student-led, student-initiated organizations on a high school or college campus that partner with a local Habitat affiliate to volunteer, raise funds, advocate and educate. As the award recipients, the two campus chapters will share a $4,500 grant from State Farm Insurance®, the national corporate sponsor of Habitat’s youth programs. The grant can be used toward Collegiate Challenge, a Habitat youth program where students travel to a different location to volunteer with Habitat during a school break.

Since 2007, State Farm has served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs, with a sponsorship commitment of more than $1.1 million in grants each year. Additionally, State Farm offices contribute more than $500,000 annually to Habitat affiliates across the United States.

Syracuse University and Western Michigan University received honorable mentions and will each be awarded $1,000 for Habitat Collegiate Challenge trips.
