The Dow Chemical Company today announced its support of Habitat for Humanity (HfH) South Africa during 2011 by funding the construction of safe and affordable houses for seven families.
This commitment forms part of a sum of around $1.5 million that Dow has pledged to Habitat for Humanity globally this year. The company’s South African commitment adds to the nearly 20 other countries where Dow has participated in Habitat builds across Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Asia Pacific and North America.
The CSR Africa Daily reports that Sazi Lutseke, Managing Director of Dow Southern Africa, said: “At Dow, we believe in the power of the Human Element to change the world. That means that we place a high value on listening to our communities. We strive not just to be a good neighbour, but a good global corporate citizen. Through authentic relationships we are building better, stronger, more sustainable communities in the places where we do business.”
In addition to widespread volunteer support, Dow assists Habitat by providing personnel who serve as subject matter experts in energy efficiency and conservation in the construction of homes, and who serve as Habitat affiliate board members.
The agreement between Dow and Habitat means that Dow’s aggregate gift-in-kind support amounts to more than $25 million over the span of the collaboration, with thousands of Dow volunteers helping families around the world realise their dreams of home ownership.
