Every four minutes, Habitat for Humanity helps a family in need of better housing.
Habitat for Humanity’s work involves more than building new single and multi-family dwellings. Habitat “housing solutions” include rehabilitating or repairing homes, as well as incremental building – upgrading a floor or adding a new roof until a family can afford more. As Habitat seeks to meet housing needs around the globe, the organization has become active in rebuilding following natural and man-made disasters, housing microfinance, advocacy, weather proofing, disaster mitigation and preparedness, technical training, environmentally-sustainable and low-cost construction technologies, and water and sanitation projects.
Habitat began working in the Asia-Pacific region in 1983 with a pilot program in Khammam, India. Since then, Habitat has supported an estimated 1.5 million individuals in the region. Every year, tens of thousands of families are helped to acquire new homes or rehabilitate or repair existing ones, as well as to access financial and technical assistance.
Habitat for Humanity helped 59,129 families in the Asia-Pacific region in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2013. That means every nine minutes, an Asian or a Pacific family has a better home and a better life thanks to Habitat for Humanity, its volunteers and partners. .
Habitat is active in Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
In Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong (part of Habitat for Humanity China), Habitat is involved in fund-raising, advocacy and organizing volunteers, along with some limited local repair and home-improvement activities.
The principal Asia-Pacific office is in Bangkok with satellite offices in Manila and Singapore.
