Editor’s note: The Jackson family’s Habitat house was built during the 2010 Carter Work Project. Mother and daughter share their reactions to 7-year-old Kenzie Jackson’s photo gracing the cover of Habitat for Humanity International’s 2010 Annual Report.
Kenzie: My momma told me that my picture was going to be on there. She said, “Guess what?”
Nicole: I teased her and said, “Oh, they just mentioned something about using your picture and asked if that would be OK.”
Kenzie: I said, “Did you say ‘yes’ or ‘no’?” And she told me she said “no!”
Nicole: [laughing] She stopped hopping and jumping all around and said, “Moooom!” I had to tell her pretty quickly I was joking.
Kenzie: I love our house. I love sleeping in my room and eating downstairs. We have fun. We go outside and play hide-and-go-seek.
Nicole: She’s been doing really, really good. They all just think of everything they can to put up on the walls. Kenzie told me she wants to get a Justin Bieber poster up on her wall. Her wall? My walls!
Kenzie: My room is my favorite spot. I want to paint my room something instead of white. Purple. I stole that from my mom’s favorite color.
Nicole: I don’t know about that. But I’m happy that they’re loving it. I think our favorite thing is just all hanging out downstairs and watching movies together.
Kenzie: And running around the house!
