Over a four week span in September and October, 2009, metro Manila and nearby Philippines provinces were battered by typhoons Ketsana, Parma, and Mirindae. These typhoons affected more than 4.6 million people―killing at least 938 people and damaging or destroying more than 277,000 homes.

Habitat’s response in the Philippines
Over a 6-month period, Habitat for Humanity Philippines is assisting with debris removal and cleanup and helping families cope with the terrible flooding caused by the typhoons. At least 120 toilets will be built in ten evacuation centers under a co-funding partnership between Philippines National Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteers from “Friends of Habitat for Humanity Philippines” continue to distribute relief packs to up to 10,000 families in these evacuation centers. It is anticipated that many families will remain at the evacuation center for an extended period of time due to areas still being under water and the large number of uninhabitable houses.

In the next stage of repair and construction, Habitat for Humanity Philippines will work with local government agencies and the ABS-CBN Foundation. Through these partnerships, Habitat will build new homes and relocate families from flood-affected areas of Pasig, Taguig, Quezon City and Laguna. Habitat plans to build 2,000 transitional shelters and 4,000 core houses for flood-affected families.
