On October 25, 2010, an earthquake and tsunami struck the Mentawai Islands near Sumatra. At least 500 people are reported to have been killed. An estimated 20,000 people have been displaced.
Additionally, on October 26, 2010, the eruption of Mount Merapi on the island of Java has resulted in the destruction of homes and the evacuation of an estimated 36,000 people. Reports from Habitat for Humanity Indonesia indicate nearly 130 Habitat home partner families are among those directly affected.
Habitat’s response in Indonesia
In West Sumatera, Habitat has resettled two villages including 94 families, built 94 transitional shelters, one evacuation building and 180 mile road, facilitated community-based disaster risk management training, and planted trees in the community.
In response to the Merapi volcano eruption, Habitat has served 4,149 families through new home construction, rehabs, water and sanitation, emergency shelter kits, well cleaning, and CBDRM training.
