Summary: Habitat for Humanity-La Crosse Area (HFHLCA) is seeking a results-oriented, experienced professional to serve as executive director. The executive director is the strategic leader of the organization, working in partnership with the board of directors, community partners, and volunteers to fulfill the mission and goals of HFHLCA.
Primary responsibilities include strategic and operational planning, fundraising, program development, management and evaluation, budget development and oversight, staff supervision, policy and procedure compliance, community outreach and marketing. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop the newly adopted critical home repair program and to develop and nurture both corporate and community partnerships.
The executive director is expected to maintain a volunteer-oriented and volunteer-friendly organizational environment within the affiliate and will to continue the existing programs in house production. Specific duties include:
Community relations:
Interfaces with professional, economic development, religious and social service groups in the community and serves on appropriate community boards and committees. The executive director will seek to develop partnerships with organizations and agencies within the community to further the goals of the affiliate and will represent HFHLCA in the community through direct public relations programs through the media and personal contact.
Financial management and development:
Directs all financial operations and will be accountable for the control of resources. The executive director will engage in fundraising activities by writing grants, making presentations and utilizing other fundraising and development techniques as required.
General administration:
Maintains an appropriate presence in all aspects of affiliate activities (e.g. construction, Habitat ReStore) and will formulate and recommend policies to the board of directors for the effective and economical operation of HFHLCA.
Board relations:
Maintains appropriate relations with the board of directors and its committees and will report monthly to the board of directors on the status of all operations and initiatives.
Liaison:
Acts as the first contact and represents the interests of HFHLCA with Habitat for Humanity at the state, national and international levels and will oversee all compliance issues and reporting to Habitat for Humanity International.
Family support:
Interact with Habitat partner families from the time of selection forward. Monitor their completion of training and sweat equity obligations and serve as a resource. Work with and support families post-purchase as well as provide assistance, referrals and monitor past-due mortgages.
Strategic planning:
Develop and implements the organization’s strategic plan and annual action plans in conjunction with the board of directors.
Program development and management:
Develop, implement and supervise programs and services that are consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan and that meet the needs of constituents (e.g. Critical Home Repair). The Executive Director must conduct all business at the highest standard of integrity, ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical.
Experience
Four to seven years of experience in a leadership role in the management of a nonprofit organization with community outreach and fundraising components.
Qualifications
The executive director must have a working knowledge of project management and possess a bachelor’s degree or have commensurate experience in business administration or a related field.
Knowledge and skills:
- Ability to effectively articulate the mission and vision of the organization – excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Public speaking skills.
- Experience and ability to conduct fundraising and development activities.
- Ability to exercise sound reasoning and good judgment in decision-making.
- Ability to work collaboratively with both staff and volunteers and to effectively supervise staff and budgets.
- Computer literacy.
