In the midst of a worldwide housing crisis, Habitat for Humanity is determined to continue building hope.
GUATEMALA (November, 2008)—This November, Habitat for Humanity International initiated the construction of its 300,001st house worldwide. The event took place in the rural community of Quebrada Honda, in Zacapa, Guatemala. Everson Galdamez and his wife, Wendy Liliana Pérez, will be living in the 300,001st house.
Zacapa was selected to host the event due to its proximity to borders with neighboring countries such as Honduras and El Salvador. In an act symbolizing the solidarity needed to reach the tremendous need that remains, volunteers from Honduras and El Salvador put their hands to work beside the Guatemalan participants and homeowner families.
Hilda Hernandez and her son, one of the three Habitat families involved in the event, together laid the bricks of their future home. The new house will provide vital privacy and space for Hilda´s four children, who were previously sharing a single room.
Both Wendy (the owner of house 300,001) and Hilda expressed gratitude for the Honduran, Salvadorian and Guatemalan brothers and sisters who, in a spirit of solidarity, had donated time and sweat to help their dream come true.
The inauguration of the 300,001st house was led by Marta Elena Hernández of Habitat’s Latin America/Caribbean office. Habitat Guatemala National Director Luis Samayoa, Board Vice-president José Orive and Clive Rainey of Habitat International all spoke in turn about the tremendous amount of work that lies ahead for the organization, even as success is heralded.
As an ardent supporter of adequate housing in Guatemala, Mrs. Trina Hidalgo took the honor of laying the first brick of house number 300,001, symbolizing Habitat’s efforts for the future. More than just the physical construction of homes, the organization now looks ahead toward the new alliances, advocacy efforts and faith in action that will be necessary to ensure access to adequate housing for all.
