Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 13 -- The main event of Habitat for Humanity's anniversary observance will provide an opportunity for the people of Indianapolis to join with the organization's many volunteers and staff and a former U.S. president in an evening of restoring hope.
Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International, has extended an invitation to the public to attend Saturday evening's anniversary event at Conseco Fieldhouse that will honor the lives served by Habitat and the lives lost in Tuesday's tragedies.
"Our Habitat organization has felt so welcomed by the city and the people of Indianapolis that we want to reciprocate by inviting to Habitat's major event anyone who would like to share in an observance that promises hope to suffering people," Fuller said. Fuller met with Mayor Bart Peterson on Wednesday to convey Habitat's gratitude for the city's support and discuss how Habitat's event could be broadened to include the entire Indianapolis community.
The mayor lent his wholehearted support to the plan and agreed to speak at the event and express the condolences and prayers of the entire city. President Jimmy Carter, who yesterday confirmed his plans to come to Indy, will join Fuller and Peterson on the program, as will Indiana's first lady, Judy O'Bannon. Carter is Habitat's most well known volunteer and will deliver the main address to the Conseco gathering.
In addition, officials of the Celebration of Hope, a coalition more than 70 Indianapolis churches that had scheduled a community-wide worship service on Sunday, have agreed to consolidate their activities with Habitat's planned observance. Celebration of Hope clergy and local choirs will be part of Saturday's program, along with many of the entertainers and artists previously booked by Habitat for its anniversary celebration. Habitat also announced today that Grammy-winning recording artist Sandi Patty has agreed to perform.
The event will begin at 8 p.m. and is free to the public. Tickets are required and there is a maximum seating capacity. Tickets are available from the Conseco Fieldhouse box office (9-6 daily) and at all Indiana area Ticketmaster locations, including Kroger Food Stores, Karma Records and LS Ayres. Phone and Internet services will not be available for these tickets. A ten ticket limit per person applies. TicketMaster and its outlets have agreed to waive all convenience charges for this important event.
