AMERICUS, Ga., Sept. 16, 2002- Habitat for Humanity International has released a Spanish-language edition of Habitat World magazine to keep pace with a growing interest in the housing organization among Spanish-speaking communities in North America, the Caribbean and Latin America.
“Habitat for Humanity has built more than 40,000 houses in Latin America and the Caribbean, so Habitat’s building momentum in the region is without question,” said Milana McLead, editor of Habitat World. “With the Spanish edition, we hope to reach even more people in the Spanish-speaking community, both inside and outside the U.S., by raising awareness of poverty and poverty-housing issues - which is, after all, Habitat World’s chief objective.”
The Spanish-language edition of Habitat World will be distributed on a first-run limited basis to 10,000 addresses in the United States and 3,500 addresses throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. An additional 2,500 copies will be distributed from Habitat for Humanity’s office in Costa Rica and 1,000 copies from its international headquarters in Americus, Ga. The magazine will make its first appearance in Los Angeles, Houston, New York, Chicago, Denver and Washington, among other U.S. cities.
Habitat World began publication 20 years ago as a primary vehicle for Habitat for Humanity International to share its mission of eliminating substandard housing.
The magazine’s content often includes feature stories about communities around the world participating in Habitat for Humanity’s building projects. The publication currently reaches nearly 2 million readers six times a year.
“Our largest work outside the United States is in Mexico,” said Millard Fuller, president and founder of Habitat for Humanity International, when addressing Habitat for Humanity’s growth outside the U.S. “More than 11,000 houses have been built in that country. Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala is also experiencing exceptional growth. We built more than 2,000 houses there last year, bringing the number of Habitat houses in that country up to more than 11,000.”
The Spanish-language edition of Habitat World magazine maintains the same visual design and content of the original magazine. The Spanish-language edition repackages some of the popular “back to the basics” content, including frequently asked questions, a glossary of Habitat for Humanity terms and 25 homeowner stories from around the world.
Furthering its effort to reach Spanish-speaking audiences, Habitat for Humanity International also produced two public service announcements (PSA) in Spanish that were distributed to major television networks, including Telemundo, CNN International, Univisión, CNN en Español and TNT Latin America.
