Delta SkyMiles to Benefit Habitat for Humanity
AMERICUS, Ga., July 1, 2002 - On every Delta flight during the third quarter of 2002, passengers will see a public service announcement highlighting the work of Habitat for Humanity International. The nonprofit, Christian housing organization has been named Delta Air Lines' SkyWish Charity of the Quarter. Delta SkyMiles members can donate mileage to help advance Habitat's worldwide work of building houses with families in need. There is a 5,000-mile minimum donation, and Delta will boost each donation by adding 1,000 miles for every 5,000 contributed.
Delta Air Lines and its employees have a history of participation with Habitat for Humanity fund raising and construction projects. What started as a recycled can drive by flight attendants now raises more than $200,000 annually for local Habitat affiliates in the U.S. Flight attendants along with pilots, mechanics, customer service agents and executives also participate in the physical construction of Habitat homes.
During the fall of 2001, more than 1200 Delta, Delta Connection and Delta Technology employees partnered with Habitat for Humanity of South Fulton County, Georgia, to build five houses at one time, a first for an Atlanta-based company. Over the past few years, Delta employees have built more than 15 homes with families in need.
"It is an honor to assist Habitat for Humanity International as it fulfills a basic need for its hardworking recipients," said Vicki Escarra, Delta Air Lines' executive vice president and chief marketing officer, in an announcement of the program.
"At Habitat for Humanity, we are grateful for the support and generosity of partners like Delta Air Lines to make sure people in need have a simple, decent place to live," said Millard Fuller, founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. "We feel blessed by their commitment to help people who are less fortunate."
