SBLI USA Honors Former U.S. President Carter and Habitat at Gala
Former White House Chief of Staff Hamilton Jordan and Habitat Board Member Diana Villiers Negroponte Accept Awards and Major Donation
NEW YORK, Jan. 27, 2003 - SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company Inc. presented its Goodwill Ambassador Award to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, and raised more than $100,000 for Habitat for Humanity International at its annual recognition gala Jan. 25.
"Tonight is an example of the excellence that emerges from the creativity and inspiration that are unique to working together as a community," said Vikki L. Pryor, president and CEO of SBLI USA.
The black-tie event brought together more than 500 of SBLI USA's associates, business partners and friends. Every year, the company honors a community organization aligned with the company's values of community building, volunteerism and empowering America's working families.
Hamilton Jordan, President Carter's former White House Chief of Staff and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer accepted the Goodwill Ambassador Award for the Nobel Prize laureate. Jordan told the story of his Uncle Clarence, who founded Koinonia Farm, an interracial Christian community in rural southwest Georgia during the 1940s. Clarence Jordan and the Koinonia community later inspired Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller in creating the organization's mission of building homes with families in need of a simple, decent place to live. Hamilton Jordan told the audience that "the power of the human spirit to achieve greatness is beyond anyone's imagining."
Diana Villiers Negroponte, a member of Habitat for Humanity International's board of directors and wife of the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, John D. Negroponte, accepted SBLI USA's Community Service Award. Negroponte thanked SBLI USA for its generous donation, saying, "If we are able to build thousands of homes in the United States and Puerto Rico, we do it because people like you are willing to come out on a Saturday evening to raise funds."
