Habitat for Humanity International Receives APEX Award
AMERICUS, Ga., Nov. 12, 2003 – Habitat for Humanity International was recognized today as one of the most respected homebuilding organizations in America by Hanley Wood, the leading business-to-business media company serving the housing and construction industries.
Presented with the APEX Award at the Big Builder ‘03 conference in Las Vegas, Centex Home Builders of Dallas and Avatar Holdings of Coral Gables, Fla., were also recipients of the award.
“Habitat for Humanity is absolutely honored to have been selected for this prestigious award,” said Tom Jones, vice president, Habitat for Humanity International. “It is especially gratifying to be recognized and appreciated by an industry that plays such a big role in helping families realize the American Dream.”
Recipients of the award were judged by their peers and chosen using an electronic survey, distributed nationally via e-mail to readers of BIG BUILDER and BUILDER magazines. The survey was administrated by a third party, Wagner Media, Marketing & Surveys. Any builder from the Hanley Wood 2002 “Builder 100” list of the nation’s biggest builders was eligible to win.
Survey respondents were asked to vote for the first, second and third place builders in five categories of corporate practice, plus a sixth measure. The builder that received the most overall points, tallied across six categories, won the overall award. The five categories surveyed were: 1) Best leadership and management, 2) Best operational excellence and efficiency, 3) Most innovative product design, 4) Best community relations/public service and, 5) Best job delivering affordable housing.
Habitat for Humanity ranked first place in developing “community relations” and engaging in “public service” by survey respondents, followed by Avatar Holdings and Centex Homes, which ranked second and third respectively.
When asked which Builder 100 company does the best job “delivering affordable housing,” survey respondents named Habitat for Humanity International in first place, followed by Centex Homes and Avatar Holdings.
“The housing industry has grown and prospered beyond anyone’s expectations, especially in the last five years,” said Wyatt Kash, editor of Big Builder magazine. “Today’s leading home builders represent some of the best and most professionally managed companies in America. This APEX Award recognizes those companies which are seen by their peers as being the best in the business of building the American Dream.”
