U.S. Habitat families receive refrigerator, range from world’s largest appliance maker
AMERICUS, GA., Sept. 20, 2004 — Habitat for Humanity International announced today that Whirlpool Corp. has surpassed the 50,000 milestone in appliance donations to its organization. Since 1999, Whirlpool has committed to donate a refrigerator and range to every Habitat home built in North America, providing more than 26,000 families with the two most essential appliances for preserving and preparing a healthy meal. In addition to donating appliances, thousands of Whirlpool employees have donated their time and skills over the years to Habitat builds in their hometown communities.
“The true sign of a great partnership is one that grows and gets stronger with time, and that’s exactly what has taken place between Whirlpool Corporation and Habitat for Humanity International,” said Jeff Fettig, chair, president and CEO of Whirlpool Corp. “Donating an Energy Star-qualified refrigerator and range to Habitat families is the foundation of our partnership. As we continue to build a stronger relationship with Habitat for Humanity, celebrating the milestone of 50,000 donated appliances is very special to our employees, our customers, and all our partners in Habitat.”
Whirlpool announced earlier this year that it is expanding its partnership with Habitat for Humanity International. In March 2004, Whirlpool announced plans to support Habitat’s work throughout Europe, Central Asia and South Africa by product and financial donations. Additionally, Whirlpool continues to grow its partnership by helping raise the public’s awareness of Habitat for Humanity by sponsoring Reba McEntire’s summer concert tour throughout North America as well as the Women’s Tennis Association throughout Europe in 2004.
“Whirlpool Corporation has proved to be one of the most valuable partners imaginable in the success and continued growth of Habitat for Humanity,” said Paul Leonard, managing director of Habitat for Humanity International. “From the donation of appliances and employee volunteers, to bringing us Reba and their expansion to Habitat Europe—Whirlpool is a leading partner in helping Habitat for Humanity eliminate poverty housing, one family at a time.”
The 50,000-appliance donation was celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Seattle, where Whirlpool teamed up with Rotary International and Chateau St. Michelle Winery to break ground on the 100th Habitat home built in Seattle. Whirlpool, Rotary International and Chateau St. Michelle have all joined forces to assist financially and physically in building Habitat homes in Seattle and surrounding areas.
