AMERICUS, Ga. (June 5, 2006) – Habitat for Humanity and professional homebuilders are kicking off National Homeownership Month with a nation-wide build to help low-income families. More than 1,000 professional homebuilders will build more than 400 homes during Habitat for Humanity’s “Home Builders Blitz” week, June 5-9.
Builders will begin raising walls and complete the homes in 130 locations on Friday, June 9. Builders are donating their professional skills, subcontractor services and materials to make the homes possible.
“Families across the country will find their lives transformed in just one week,” said Kevin Campbell, national director of the Home Builders Blitz, Habitat for Humanity International. “We are grateful for the many professional builders taking part in this project and for the many sponsors who have donated building materials, labor and funding.”
The idea of a nationwide build that partnered Habitat for Humanity with professional homebuilders began in Raleigh, N.C., in 2002 when 12 homes were constructed in one week. In Raleigh in 2003, 24 homes were built in a week and 12 homes in Greensboro, N.C. In 2004, professional homebuilders built 12 Habitat homes in Greensboro and in 2005, seven were blitz built in Durham, N.C. This year, the national kick off for Habitat’s first nationwide Home Builders Blitz will be in Raleigh and the last house will be dedicated there for the week.
Habitat is ranked the 18th largest home builder in the United States and the third largest private home builder. Habitat works in more than 1,700 locations across the country completing on average more than 5,000 homes per year and nearly 20,000 homes per year outside the United States.
