AMERICUS, Ga. (August 30, 2006) – The Potter’s House, the Dallas-based church founded by Bishop T.D. Jakes, will launch a fundraising campaign to sponsor and build up to 50 Habitat for Humanity houses in the Gulf Coast region. The initial phase of 10 houses represents a $350,000 target by The Potter’s House, in addition to numerous hours of volunteer labor by church supporters in the Gulf Coast.
“Immediately after Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005,” said Bishop Jakes, “until this day, our church family has done all we can to assist the survivors of this country’s most devastating natural disaster. The Potter’s House is excited by the prospect of partnering with Habitat for Humanity as we work to build new homes in the Gulf Coast region, and as a result, empower families overwhelmed by this terrible tragedy.”
The Potter’s House will raise $35,000 for each house, which will be matched by an anonymous donation in the amount of $40,000 to meet the $75,000 per house sponsorship level.
The Potter’s House has worked with Habitat in the past to build two houses in Atlanta in conjunction with the 2003 ManPower conference. The Potter’s House also collaborated with Habitat during this year’s Global Day of Prayer in Dallas.
“It is an honor for Habitat for Humanity to partner with The Potter’s House,” said Rick Beech, director of Church Relations at Habitat for Humanity International. “The Potter’s House has touched lives across Dallas and around the world and we wish them much success as they mobilize their powerful network to help families affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes.”
The partnership with The Potter’s House is part of Habitat for Humanity’s hurricane recovery effort, Operation Home Delivery. Since the hurricanes, Habitat has more than 300 houses completed or under construction in the Gulf Coast. Operation Home Delivery aims to construct 1,000 houses in the hurricane-affected region by mid-summer 2007.
