2006 donation brings the company’s total support for Habitat for Humanity to more than $10 million since 2002
AMERICUS, Ga. (Sept. 7, 2006) – Habitat for Humanity International today announced that FirstEnergy Corp., Ohio’s largest contributor to the organization’s five-year More than Houses campaign, has continued its support of building simple, decent homes with a $1.26 million donation in 2006, bringing total support to more than $10 million since 2002.
“By working with Habitat for Humanity we not only help people realize their dream of homeownership, but we are doing it in partnership with the people right here in the communities we serve,” said FirstEnergy President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Alexander.
The contribution will help build more than 20 homes this year, bringing the total number of homes sponsored by the company to nearly 200. Over the past five years, FirstEnergy has given $10.7 million to help eliminate substandard housing in Ohio, making it a significant contributor to Habitat’s “More than Houses” campaign. Each of the Habitat for Humanity homes are built and certified to EnergyStar™ energy efficiency standards.
“FirstEnergy has made an enormous impact on the lives of low-income families in Ohio,” said Mark Crozet, vice president of Development at Habitat for Humanity International. “This growing partnership will allow Habitat to build even more affordable houses in Ohio communities.”
In addition to FirstEnergy’s financial support, its employees have donated their time to help build the homes, joining with Habitat’s local volunteers to improve communities and the lives of Ohio families.
According to the most recent census, more than 750,000 Ohio residents live in poverty, and nearly one out of every four Ohio families spends more than 30 percent of its income on housing. With its contributions, FirstEnergy is doing its part to help eliminate substandard housing in Ohio by building affordable, energy-efficient homes in partnership with low-income families.
