AMERICUS, Ga. (July 10, 2007) – Eighty youth from across the country are hammering nails and raising walls as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Summer Youth Blitz program.
For 12 years, Summer Youth Blitz has provided an opportunity for youth, ages 16 to 18, to travel outside their communities to help build a house with a Habitat affiliate and partner family. Habitat’s Summer Youth Blitz program accepts applications from individual youth and not from groups, which allows them to meet new people while experiencing a way of life different from their own.
The 80 Summer Youth Blitz 2007 volunteers were chosen and placed in one of four groups, each of which will travel to different locations. The participants will work with Habitat affiliates in Brainerd, Minn., or Winston Salem, N.C., July 8 – 20; West Palm Beach, Fla., or Bakersfield, Calif., July 29-Aug. 10. Each group will help with construction during the day and activities that focus on peer leadership, social justice, the cycle of poverty, tolerance and team building in the evening. This year’s volunteers are from 23 states, Morocco, Canada and Great Britain.
“Working with Habitat is a summer break activity for thousands of youth,” said Marc Vermouth, Habitat’s Summer Youth Blitz administrator. “Summer Youth Blitz expands the local youth volunteer experience by exposing participants to a new community and by providing an opportunity for them to interact and learn from a diverse group of people while they help make the dream of homeownership a reality.”
Alumni from past Summer Youth Blitz builds traveled to Mobile, Ala., in June to help build homes in partnership with low-income families impacted by the 2005 hurricane season.
Summer Youth Blitz is one of the many programs Habitat’s Youth Programs department uses to engage young people in its mission to provide simple, decent and affordable homes. State Farm® is the 2007 underwriter for Habitat’s Youth Programs department.
