Company donates $1 million in funds and services to support Habitat’s mission
ATLANTA– Habitat for Humanity International has announced a $1 million partnership with Waste Management to further Habitat’s mission of building decent, affordable housing. Waste Management will provide monetary support, in-kind donations and a variety of waste disposal services to Habitat affiliates across the United States and Canada.
“Many of our affiliates are currently working with Waste Management in this key area of construction support. This partnership that will reach across the United States and Canada will allow our two organizations to serve more families while being good environmental stewards,” said Mark Crozet, senior vice president of resource development for Habitat for Humanity International.
Along with financial support from Waste Management the three-year partnership will support Habitat affiliates’ local building projects by providing a variety of industry specific services such as disposal and waste collection, construction and demolition recycling and loading services.
This year, Habitat for Humanity celebrated 25 years of dedicated service offered by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn with a weeklong build along the U.S. Gulf Coast. As part of its commitment to Habitat for Humanity, Waste Management volunteers – including CEO David Steiner – provided the hands to hoist a paint brush or swing a hammer.
“One of our strategic goals is to be regarded as a trusted and valued community partner,” Steiner said. “We are proud to return to the Carter Work project. Last year, Waste Management volunteers supported the project in Los Angeles, and the company provided trash collection and construction material recycling. For many years, Waste Management volunteers have helped to build Habitat for Humanity homes in many of the communities where we work.”
Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, headquartered in Biloxi, served as host affiliate for the 2008 Carter Project. Here – and at 17 other participating Habitat affiliates throughout Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Texas – more than 250 homes will be built in the project’s name. In the fall, Waste Management will build a Carter Project house in the company’s headquarters city of Houston.
“Waste Management was an important part of helping Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Work Project meet local construction recycling requirements and reach the project goal of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s silver certification,” said Everett Bass, vice president of public sector services and community relations for Waste Management. “Additionally, we are proud to be the sponsor of the first green Habitat house in Minnesota. This home will be constructed in June and shows how both Waste Management and Habitat for Humanity are committed to being green in everything we do.”
Waste Management became involved with Habitat for Humanity on a national level in 2007 as a partner of the Jimmy Carter Work Project in Los Angeles.
