AMERICUS, Ga. (June 27, 2008) – Youth from across the country are spending a week hammering nails and raising walls as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Youth Immersion program.
Youth Immersion serves young people, ages 16 to 25, by providing one-week poverty-education experiences. Participants partner with local Habitat affiliates to help build a home while also focusing on civic leadership, diversity, poverty and substandard housing.
One-hundred fifty youth from 27 states, Canada, France and Trinidad and Tobago were selected for Habitat’s Youth Immersion 2008 and placed in four different groups. Volunteers will travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn.; Tacoma, Wash.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Winston-Salem, N.C., to help build Habitat homes.
“The Youth Immersion program is a great way for young people to get involved in their communities while also having fun,” said Marc Vermouth, Habitat’s Youth Immersion coordinator. “Youth Immersion volunteers are provided the opportunity to learn from a diverse group of people in a new place, while at the same time helping make the dream of homeownership a reality for a partner family.”
Youth Immersion is one of the Youth Programs that Habitat’s Volunteer Mobilization department uses to engage youth around the world in Habitat’s mission to provide simple, decent and affordable homes. Habitat’s Youth Programs were created with the mission to capture the imagination, energy and hope of young people worldwide, ages 5 to 25, in order to productively and responsibly involve them as leaders in the work of Habitat. State Farm® is the 2008 underwriter for Habitat’s Youth Programs department.
