ATLANTA (Oct. 13, 2009) – Habitat for Humanity International volunteer Tom Gipson has been selected as the 2009 grand prize winner of The Ultimate Volunteer Contest sponsored by ABC’s “The View.” Gipson was one of 10 finalists chosen from 2,000 nominations nationwide.
Gipson, a Habitat volunteer and professional homebuilder in Raleigh, North Carolina started a program called Home Builders Blitz in 2002. That year, Gipson rallied local builders for an accelerated, weeklong build in Raleigh. Gipson’s efforts were so successful that Habitat for Humanity International decided to promote Home Builders Blitz as a nationwide event. The first national Home Builders Blitz, held in 2006, resulted in more than 400 new Habitat homes in communities across the country.
“Through the hundreds of walls raised and many nails he’s hammered, Tom Gipson’s commitment to service and families in need shines brightly,” said Chris Clarke, Habitat’s senior vice president of Marketing and Communications. “Tom’s receipt of the Ultimate Volunteer award is a shining achievement, and Habitat is extremely proud to call him a partner in our quest to build decent, affordable homes.”
The online Ultimate Volunteer contest recognized extraordinary volunteer efforts nationwide and ran from October 6–11. The winning prize package includes a 3-day/2-night trip for two to New York City to attend a taping of “The View,” 1 million Starwood Hotel & Resorts preferred guest Starpoints, and $10,000 in cash. Gipson plans to donate his winnings to Habitat for Humanity to further the organization’s goal of eradicating poverty housing.
