Women unite in St. Augustine

Rize Cole, a longtime Habitat for Humanity of St. Augustine/St. Johns County (Fla.) volunteer, works hard to finish the framing.

I arrived at our Women Build site at 7:30 a.m. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, the sun was shining brightly and there was a pleasant breeze. Soon our women volunteers arrived, excited to receive their new t-shirts, hats and nail aprons. Within minutes, the Florida heat kicked in and our crew was sure thankful for their hats to shade some of that sweltering sun!

The construction supervisor explained the plan for the day and the women were glad to get to work. The task for the day: completing the framing for a house. The new home will belong to a very hard-working single mom with a beautiful four-year-old son.

In addition to working more than full-time, she is on the build site every Saturday, enjoying being able to participate in building her own home. In between working and building her own home, she is also working on getting her GED, studying for the Certified Nursing Assistant test, and caring for her four-year-old. She is one busy woman! What a tremendous Mother’s Day gift it is for her to have a great group of hard-working women complete the framing of her new home.

Women from all walks of life participated in this exciting build. There were new mothers, new grandmothers, poets and bicyclists. Everyone enjoyed getting to know each other, hearing of different life experiences and learning how each other got involved with Habitat for Humanity. It truly was a day of celebrating women of all ages and backgrounds.

A representative from Lowe’s joined us in the morning and gave all the women more free t-shirts and pencils to use on the build site. We took lots of pictures, enjoyed a few laughs and thanked Lowe’s for their generosity.

It’s exciting to see everyone in the community working together for such a worthy cause. To witness these dedicated, hard-working women build a home for another dedicated, hard-working woman during National Women Build Week – is truly a phenomenal way to celebrate this great event!
