Habitat for Humanity Int'l -- First Ladies Build
|
First Ladies Build demonstrates how women can meet the challenge of poverty housing.
From April 1999 through April 2001, current and former first ladies and women governors led women crews in building Habitat houses in or near each U.S. state's capital. Habitat's Women Build department launched First Ladies Build to demonstrate how women can meet the challenge of poverty housing. Many Habitat affiliates have organized their own women-built houses near First Ladies Build sites; and interest in women's builds has grown internationally, with builds taking place in Uganda, the Philippines, Tanzania, Northern Ireland, Portugal, New Zealand, Korea, Fiji, South Africa, Canada and Hungary.

First Ladies Cathy Keating (Okla.) and Janet Huckabee (Ark.) actively champion the Women Build department and were dedicated participants in First Ladies Build events. Spearheading the Women Build department is an active steering council comprised of a cross-section of women, including the aforementioned first ladies, prominent businesswomen and Habitat co-founder Linda Fuller.
Habitat for Humanity International's Women Build department promotes the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat houses. A women-built house provides women with an unintimidating environment in which to learn construction skills. By organizing women's builds, Habitat taps an enormously underestimated resource, gives women an opportunity to contradict stereotypical roles and increases the number of houses that will be built with families in need.
