What is Youth United?
A program that helps youth raise money and build Habitat houses in their neighborhoods.

 


Who runs the Youth United program?
Youth United is run by youth and for youth. Each local Youth United group is run by a steering committee typically made up of high school- and college-age youth. The steering committee has a chair, co-chair, secretary and treasurer and committee chair people. The steering committee works together to plan Youth United projects and manage fund-raising, recruitment, advocacy and community outreach. An adult adviser oversees the projects and provides leadership and support.

How do Youth United groups raise money to build houses?
There are several different ways to raise money, from running a car wash to writing grant applications. You can download the Youth United fund-raising guide for more ideas. Additionally, State Farm provided grants to many Youth United projects and other Habitat youth programs.

I’m 16 or older. Can I help build a Habitat house?
Yes!

I’m younger than 16. Can I help build a Habitat house?
There are several ways you can participate; you can raise funds, advocate, reach out to involve your community, plan events, paint and landscape. Unfortunately, no one under 16 is allowed to be present on a Habitat build site while construction is taking place. This is strictly enforced to prevent injuries.

What Youth United positions are available for me?

  • Youth United Member: Best suited for those who want to be involved with Youth United but are not ready to take on a leadership role. Members help build a Youth United house, assist with fund-raisers and attend Youth United meetings.
  • Sub-Committee Member: Assists the sub-committee chairperson and other sub-committee members in the planning and coordination of various projects. Also attends monthly general meetings and any necessary committee meetings.
  • Steering Committee Member: For those who want to be more involved in planning events and are willing to commit the time required of the positions. The steering committee is made up of a chair, co-chair, secretary, treasurer and committee members.

    Everyone has the opportunity to become a leader. You determine how much you invest into the program! We do ask that leaders make a commitment of six months to a year to ensure positive growth within the Youth United project.


Join Youth United in your area

  • To find out if the local Habitat for Humanity near you has a Youth United group, check the list of participating affiliates. If they do, call or e-mail them using the contact information listed.
  • If your local Habitat affiliate does not have a Youth United program, ask them if you can start one. The Youth United coordinator in your area can send you a starter kit about how to establish a Youth United group. Check out the Getting Started with Youth United guide for more information.
