Europe and Central Asia

The number of people who live in poverty is rising in Europe and Central Asia. These individuals endure the burden of substandard housing and live in unsafe, poorly constructed structures without access to clean water. In Romania, for example, 40 percent of the population lives in low quality housing. In Kyrgyzstan, only 16.8 percent of rural people have running water in the home. Habitat for Humanity is focused on changing these numbers. Habitat works in 16 nations across Europe and Central Asia and has placed about 2,100 families in a home. In recent years, Habitat has concentrated on the nations of Slovakia, Romania, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Macedonia, and Armenia. With the help of volunteers, almost 700 homes were built in these countries during 2006. Volunteers, moreover, come from places across the globe to help Habitat in Europe and Central Asia. Through Habitat’s Global Village Program, groups of volunteers build together for about a week in a certain country. These efforts promote volunteerism, spread Habitat’s mission and help to eliminate poverty housing in Europe and Central Asia.
