North America for Street Team
Many families are unable to afford homes in North America. In the United States, for instance, 30 million families out of over 300 million citizens face a housing crisis. They encounter overcrowded conditions and lack of plumbing, hot water and electricity. Although about half of these families qualify for government aid, only 4.1 million receive help from the government. Parents, children, the elderly and disabled are forced into undesirable housing situations.
Habitat for Humanity’s volunteers help to lessen the burden of housing costs by building decent and affordable homes. Habitat builds homes in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are over 1500 affiliates in the U.S.A. and 52 affiliates in Canada. Habitat for Humanity Canada provided a big step for the Habitat organization. It was the first Habitat organization to operate outside of the United States. It was also the first host of the Jimmy Carter Work Project, in which volunteers work alongside U.S. President Jimmy Carter on a housing build for a week. Habitat continues to spread its mission across North America and assist families in their housing needs.
