640 million children in the world today need a better place to live. That’s enough kids to fill over 1,000 football stadiums. In the United States, 95 million people need a better place to live or do not make enough money to pay for a simple, decent place to live. That’s almost one third of the population. This means that one out of every three people needs better housing. Why is it so hard for people in poverty to buy land?
• Land is very expensive. If someone does not make enough money to pay for food, clothes and a place to live, it is very hard to save money.
• There are lots of fees you have to pay. Even if a person can afford to buy land, they may not be able to pay all of the fees.
• In some countries, only men can own land. A woman, even if she can afford to, cannot buy land in these countries.
• The system to acquire land can be long and confusing. Without someone like a lawyer to explain it, many people would not be able to understand the system.
