YOUTH PROGRAMS NATIONAL AWARDS
HFHI’s Youth Programs department proudly announces the third annual National Awards! The purpose of the annual National Awards program is to recognize and encourage both the youth and those who support youth involvement in productivity, innovation and creativity in the accomplishment of Habitat for Humanity’s mission.

The awards will be given in the following categories: Campus Chapters, Collegiate Challenge, Youth United and Youth Immersion. View a complete listing of the national awards here or read more below.



CAMPUS CHAPTERS
Campus Chapter of the Year

Description:
This award recognizes the chapter that fulfills the four functions of a campus chapter and has shown outstanding performance in all aspects. For the second year in a row, State Farm will be awarding the winning chapter a generous gift of $20,000 toward a Global Village trip of the campus chapter’s choice!

Campus Chapter Clarence Jordan Award
Description:
This award is given in memory of Clarence Jordan, who is known as the spiritual father of Habitat for Humanity. Together Jordan and Habitat founder, Millard Fuller, came up with the idea of “partnership housing.” Jordan is best known for his creative translation of the New Testament, The Cotton Patch Gospel. The award showcases the chapter that demonstrates creativity or innovation within the Standards of Excellence.

Campus Chapter Volunteer of the Year
Description:
This award is designed to give each chapter the ability to nationally recognize one outstanding member. Each chapter’s Volunteer of the Year should have given time and talent above what could be expected, inspired others to deeper commitment to Habitat for Humanity’s mission, and demonstrated creativity and/or innovation.

New! Outstanding Campus Chapter Liaison
Description:
This award recognizes an affiliate contact person who goes above and beyond supporting the campus chapter(s) in partnership with his/her affiliate. One winner will be selected from each of the Campus Chapters regions.

New! Tithe Awards
Description:
Campus Chapters will give Tithe Awards to campus chapters who have made outstanding contributions to Habitat’s global mission through tithe donations. Awards include:

    • Corner to Corner: Chapters that tithe to a country on the opposite side of the globe from their state.

    • Tithe Partners: Chapters that tithe to the same country as their affiliate.

    • Global Givers: Chapters that travel to the country they tithe to on a Global Village trip.

    • T&T of Tithe: The chapter with the largest tithe donation.

    • Gateway Givers: For the campus chapters with the second-, third- and fourth-largest tithe donations.
    Requirements for eligibility:
    All tithe donations must be submitted before June 30, 2008, and the annual report must be submitted by May 31, 2008.

2008-2009 State Farm Matching Grants
The application for the 2008-2009 State Farm Matching Grants will be available in fall 2008. You can read more about the 2008-2009 grants that will be available here.

COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE
Student Group MVP

Description:
This award will be given out to the student group that has gone above and beyond to provide the greatest benefit to a Habitat for Humanity affiliate during Collegiate Challenge.

Host Affiliate MVP
This award will be given to the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge host affiliate that went above and beyond their obligations to ensure that participating student groups had a phenomenal and meaningful Collegiate Challenge experience. Qualities of a deserving Collegiate Challenge host affiliate may include (but are not limited to): providing opportunities for your group to interact with the local community, educating your group about local poverty housing issues, a great building experience with helpful and friendly supervision, a welcoming and grateful attitude, and good communication with you before and during your time with them.

Landmark Years
These awards showcase host affiliates who have consistently hosted Collegiate Challenge in consecutive five-year intervals.

GLOBAL VILLAGE YOUTH PROGRAM

SERVICE LEARNING
Service-Learning Partnership

Description:
The Service-Learning Partnership seeks to improve student academic performance, increase student civic involvement, increase awareness of poverty housing issues, provide service to the community, and engage youth in working with their local Habitat affiliate. For the 2008-2009 school year, teachers and their local Habitat affiliate can jointly apply for a one year grant of up to $7,000 to cover educational expenses associated with the service-learning project. YOUTH IMMERSION
Spirit of Youth Immersion

Description:
This award commends one YI alumnus for his/her continued dedication and service to Habitat, or other NGOs and nonprofits.

YOUTH UNITED
Building the Future Challenge Grants

Description:
Thanks to a generous grant from State Farm, all Youth United affiliates with a Letter of Intent (letter submitted to HFHI when your affiliate originally started their Youth United group) signed prior to March 1, 2008, are eligible to apply for one of the five $10,000 or the 10 $5,000 Building the Future Challenge Grants. Description:

Youth United Urban Grants
Description:
Habitat for Humanity’s Youth Program department and State Farm® are pleased to offer four $10,000 Youth United Urban Grants for 2008-2009. The goal of this program is to help urban affiliates increase capacity by engaging local youth. A variety of awards for youth involved in service are available through Youth Service America. Many of the awards available are sponsored by State Farm, the Youth Programs department’s National Underwriter.

ADOBE
Corporation/Foundation Description:
Adobe supports strategic programs and partnerships that help make communities better, stronger, and more vibrant places to live, work and do business. Adobe’s focus areas for giving and grants programs are designed to increase Adobe’s impact in the community through support of more organizations, and strengthen our role as a corporate partner by creating deeper, stronger, and richer partnerships.
Grant Opportunities:
The Adobe Action Grant program provides one-time cash only grants for general operating and program support through a competitive, quarterly online application process. Grant amounts range from $5,000 to $20,000 and are for one year only. Organizations are eligible for one Adobe Action Grant per year.
Adobe also supports nonprofit organizations and programs located in Adobe communities that address community-specific needs, with an emphasis on the following criteria: arts and cultural organizations with the mission or principal focus on the creation, promotion and exhibition of visual arts, multimedia or video; providing services to reduce hunger and homelessness and provide affordable housing; protecting the natural environment and improving public spaces for the enjoyment of the community; and improving access to electronic information for people with disabilities.

BEN & JERRY’S FOUNDATION
Corporation/Foundation Description:
The Ben & Jerry’s Foundation offers competitive grants to not-for-profit, grassroots organizations throughout the United States which facilitate progressive social change by addressing the underlying conditions of societal and environmental problems. All of the foundation’s funding decisions are made by a team of Ben & Jerry’s employees that meets once a month to review proposals.
Grant Opportunities:
Although the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation doesn’t prioritize any particular issue area for funding, we do focus on the types of activities and strategies an organization uses for creating social change in any number of areas. The foundation will only consider proposals from grassroots, constituent-led organizations that are organizing for systemic social change. We support programs and projects that are examples of creative problem-solving.

ECHOING GREEN
Corporation/Foundation Description:
To accelerate social change, Echoing Green invests in and supports outstanding emerging social entrepreneurs to launch new organizations that deliver bold, high-impact solutions. Through a two-year fellowship program, we help our network of visionaries develop new solutions to society’s most difficult problems. These social entrepreneurs and their organizations work to solve deeply rooted social, environmental, economic and political inequities to ensure equal access and to help all individuals reach their potential. To date, Echoing Green has invested $25 million in seed funding to nearly 450 social entrepreneurs and their innovative organizations.
Grant Opportunities:
Each year, Echoing Green awards 20 two-year fellowships to entrepreneurs creating new social change organizations. Fellows receive up to $90,000 in seed funding and technical support to turn their innovative ideas into sustainable organizations. Echoing Green seeks individuals or partnerships (organizations led by two people) with innovative solutions to significant social problems; strategies to create high-impact, sustainable change in people’s lives; and the ability to grow and lead a new organization. The application process is open to citizens of all nationalities, working in any country.

KOHL’S CARES FOR KIDS
Corporation/Foundation Description:
Through our Fundraising Card program, Kohl’s has created a simple, effective way to raise funds for schools and nonprofit youth organizations and eliminate many of the hassles associated with fund raising!
Grant Opportunities
: The Kohl’s Fundraising Cards are sold to the organizations at a discount of 5 percent for purchases over $1,000 and 3 percent for total purchases from $500 to $999. Cards are available in denominations of $10, $25, $50 and $100. The fund-raising group then sells the cards at face value and keeps the profits.

MATTEL’S CHILDRENS FOUNDATION
Corporation/Foundation Description:
Mattel and the Mattel Children’s Foundation are pleased to continue for the third year our Domestic Grantmaking Program. Through this effort, unsolicited applications for funds from organizations benefiting children in need are accepted, pending the eligibility requirements and guidelines.

MCKENZIE FOUNDATION

The Motorola Foundation provides funding to higher education as well as a multitude of primary and secondary education programs assisting individuals to reach their greatest potential and to become lifelong learners.

WAL-MART FOUNDATION
Corporation/Foundation Description:
The Community Grant Program is the largest program funded by the Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB Foundation and includes both matching and direct grants. The Matching Grant program allows local nonprofit organizations to hold fund-raisers outside their local Wal-Mart or SAM’S CLUB. Wal-Mart and SAM’S CLUB can elect to match a portion of the funds raised up to $1,000. Events held off the premises of a Wal-Mart store or SAM’S CLUB are also eligible for funding when a Wal-Mart or SAM’S CLUB associate is actively involved in the event. Additionally, once the Wal-Mart or SAM’S CLUB has met certain criteria in the Matching Grant Program each year, a second source of funding — direct grants — is awarded to the store/club to use in the community. These funds do not require a fund-raiser to be held; instead the funds can be awarded directly to a deserving organization.

WHIRLPOOL FOUNDATION
Corporation/Foundation Description:
Whirlpool Foundation addresses community issues with a global approach that better leverages resources and broadens the impact of change and improvement. Since its founding, hundreds of organizations and programs have benefited from more than $128 million in grants.

WILLIAM T. GRANT FOUNDATION
Corporation/Foundation Description:
The goal of the William T. Grant Foundation is to help create a society that values young people and enables them to reach their full potential.
