Students will write letters and make simple gifts to build and strengthen a sense of community.

Poetry: Bringing a community together
Students will organize, publicize and hold a poetry slam to benefit Habitat for Humanity.
Grade level: middle school.
Building a beloved community
Students will spend the session reflecting on and writing about the ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They will make connections between King’s mission and that of organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity. To put Dr. King’s beliefs into action, they will plan a volunteer project involving a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.
