Vermont volunteer trip build

Manchester, Vermont

Home construction

Help build new homes with those in need.

8 days

Trip cost: US$1,675

Join us as we travel to the picturesque mountain region of southwest Vermont. You'll help build safe, affordable homes with families in the historic community of Manchester.

Even with a population of less than 5,000, some residents of this small Vermont town struggle with the high cost of housing that is rampant throughout the state. This trip will offer the unique perspective of understanding the barriers to affordable housing in the United States.

You'll spend the week working alongside skilled construction supervisors and the rest of your team. It's a true group experience, as you'll stay together as a team in a nearby vacation rental. Lunch, snacks and water will be provided on the build site, and you'll prepare meals as a team or dine out at local restaurants. In the evenings, you'll have time to rest and reflect with your team on the week's experience.

  • Sunday: Arrive. Grab your packed bags and meet us in Albany, New York. You'll be greeted at the airport by your team leader.
  • Monday: Learn. Habitat staff will tell you more about their work in Bennington County, and you'll begin working on the build site.
  • Tuesday-Friday: Build. Spend the day on the build site, followed by dinner and evening activities.
  • Saturday: Explore. Experience the historic town of Manchester by visiting local sites and nature scenes. Enjoy a final dinner with your team.
  • Sunday: Goodbyes. You may continue your journey in Vermont independently, or you can head home.

Leading this team

Debbie Herskovitz (known as Mrs. Hershey to her students) and Brooke Greenberg will lead this team to Vermont and would love to tell you more about the experience!

When asked why she's eager to lead another trip, Debbie shared, "I was awarded a grant from my school to 'broaden my horizons.' To do this, I chose to build a house in Fiji with Habitat. I was hooked! That was six years ago! Since then, I have traveled to Guatemala, Portugal, Argentina, New Mexico and Prince Edward Island. I love working, laughing, eating and sharing stories with the wonderful people I meet on the same mission... [We're] helping people and making a difference."

Brooke shared, "When I first embarked on a Global Village build, I knew I was doing good for someone else. Less than a week later, I realized that I was doing good for me. Habitat for Humanity is more than just homes — it's partnership, it's friendship and love."
