Guatemala volunteer trip

Thanksgiving Build- Guatemala

Healthy homes

Upgrade existing houses with smokeless stoves, water filtration systems, new bathrooms and more.

9 days

Trip cost: US$2,045

Spend Thanksgiving week working alongside homeowners and your team to bring strength, stability and self-reliance to communities in Guatemala.

Discover how Habitat Guatemala is addressing pressing health issues for families earning US$2-4 per day through the Healthy Home Kit initiative. Decent, affordable housing provides an environment that promotes health and stability. The three-part initiative focuses on building smokeless stoves, sanitary latrines and water filtration systems. Your team will have the opportunity to serve multiple families through one or all of the healthy home initiatives.

Teams stay in double-occupancy rooms at a local hotel and explore restaurants in the area of meals at their hotel while also reflecting with their teams in the evening about the week.

As part of this team you’ll impact several families in one week while learning about the innovative ways Habitat is helping Guatemalan families through shelter initiatives. You’ll work hard on the build site digging a foundation, mixing concrete and mortar, splitting concrete blocks and laying them for the walls of the stove, latrine or water filtration system.

  • Saturday: Arrive. Depart from home and join us in Guatemala! Habitat will greet you when you arrive and take you to meet your team.
  • Sunday: Learn. Travel to your hosting community. The team will learn about Habitat’s innovative work and your project.
  • Monday-Friday: Build. Mix cement, lay bricks and assist the local masons to build a new home or improve an existing one. The team will have time for excursions, rest and reflection meetings in the evenings.
  • Saturday: Explore. The team will go sightseeing in and around Antigua and sample local cuisine.
  • Sunday: Goodbyes. Continue your journey in Guatemala independently or head on home.

Leading this team

Duane Hershberger is leading this team to Guatemala, one of his favorite locations. When asked why he’s excited to return again, Duane said, “As we finished a week of hard work and wonderful conversations on a previous Guatemala trip, one of the Global Village volunteers commented on Friday afternoon at the closing ceremony, ‘I’m so tired but so inspired.’ That sums up the Global Village week for nearly everyone, especially me. I love watching that happen.”
