Silay City, Philippines
July 12-19, 2020: Help build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Trip cost: US$1,620
Grab your hammer and help informal settlers gain access to safe, affordable housing on this Global Village trip to the Philippines.
The Philippines current housing backlog is estimated at 5.5 million units and is projected to reach 6.5 million by 2030. Additionally, informal settler families number around 2.2 million nationwide. The goal of Habitat for Humanity Philippines is to help lessen the housing backlog by building decent, affordable homes for 800,000 families by the year 2020. In Silay City, Habitat is partnering with the community, families and volunteers to create a holistic community for 546 low-income, informal settlers who are living along danger zones or were evicted from privately owned lands.
You’ll be staying in double-occupancy rooms at a nearby hotel where breakfast and dinner will be provided. Lunches will be served on the build site. Work site tasks typically include excavation, mixing cement, cementing the floor, laying bricks or digging holes for septic tanks. Off the build site, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the ruins of Talisay, churches or interact with the local community.
- Sunday: Welcome. Arrive at Bacolod Silay International Airport where Habitat staff will greet you and transport you 30 minutes to the host site.
- Monday-Friday: Build. Spend the day on the build site, breaking for lunch, snacks and water throughout the day. You’ll have free time and team activities in the evenings.
- Saturday: Celebrate. Spend the morning working on the build site before enjoying a farewell ceremony celebrating the week’s accomplishments.
- Sunday: Goodbyes. After exploring the city, you can continue your journey in the Philippines independently or head home.
