Habitat Honduras celebrates 20,000 decent homes
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (April 17, 2015) — “We had been renting for nine years and we were tired of it. Today, I thank God and Habitat for Humanity for supporting us to build our house. For me, it’s a dream come true”, said Misael Ayala Zelaya who, with his wife Juana, are one of the 20,000 families now living in decent homes thanks to Habitat for Humanity Honduras.
Since 1989, Habitat Honduras works with low-income families so they can have access to adequate housing. Its mission began in the village of San Isidro, in the Santa Cruz de Yojoa municipality, and currently it manages seven regional offices across the country.
“Putting God’s love into action, we are celebrating 20,000 housing solutions built nationwide and thousands of Hondurans that have made their dream a reality,” said Alberto Benitez, director of Habitat Honduras.
“We celebrate this milestone with the Honduran families, volunteers and national and international donors, our strategic partners, local governments, suppliers, civil society and employees, all of whom are a fundamental part of our work and who have supported us to reach this milestone,” he added.
Habitat for Humanity’s contribution goes beyond building, as it also contributes to the stability and cohesion of the Honduran families and communities, thus building a better future. For Habitat, housing is a basic human right that helps to break the cycle of poverty.
