Q: I want my money to help families who are struggling in the U.S. Can I choose where my donations will be used?
A: We always respect our donors’ wishes and will apply funds wherever our donors designate. At the same time, we have found that many of our donors are excited to find that their gifts can help a family in another country as well as a family in their community.
Habitat’s vision has always been a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Clarence Jordan, a pastor from Georgia who came up with the original idea of partnership housing, put it this way: “It is not enough to limit your love to your own nation, to your own group. You must respond with love even to those outside of it. This concept enables people to live together not as nations, but as the human race.”
We have become the largest private homebuilder in the United States, and the great majority of the funds raised in the U.S. are spent in the U.S. However, because we raise significant funds outside the United States and because houses are so much less expensive in other areas, about 90 percent of the families we serve are in other countries. (The average cost of a home outside the U.S. is $4,400.)
I’ve had the privilege of seeing our work in almost 50 countries and in almost every state in the U.S. Poverty housing is unacceptable everywhere. It breaks my heart to see the conditions in which so many families live, and I rejoice with every family who has new hope and the foundation for a better life because they have a simple, decent place to live.
I appreciate your heart for those in need in this country. We do have to do more here and I believe we can. I also believe we can do more in the rest of the world. I hope you will help us change hearts so that poverty housing is socially, politically and religiously unacceptable.
