Sam Mompongo tithe award winners

Named in honor of Sam Mompongo, an educator and leader in the village of Ntdondo, Zaire, which is now modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ntondo is about 90 miles from Mbandaka, a town where Millard and Linda Fuller first started building houses in 1973.

Mompongo took what the Fullers had started in Mbandaka and established the second Habitat affiliate in Ntondo.  In 1979, at a home dedication, Mompongo took up a $400 collection in his local village and presented half of the money to Millard Fuller. This money was used to start a new Habitat affiliate in Aguacatan, Guatemala.
