El Salvador: A Country Profile
Photos by Ezra Millstein
El Salvador , the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America, has come a long way. According to UNICEF figures, for example, the mortality rate for children under age 5 dropped by more than 50 percent between 1990 and 2007. That said, there is still far to go. Habitat for Humanity El Salvador has been working since 1992 and completed its 7,000th house in July. New initiatives in the country include financial literacy training and a focus on building holistic model communities, creating basic infrastructure — water and electricity — but also social infrastructure, such as community centers. With every milestone, every model community, Habitat El Salvador continues to help pave the winding road to better living conditions for thousands of people.
