Women Build Week 2013
The Edison Park neighborhood, just outside of Nashville, sat half-finished for nearly five years. The 2007 recession had resulted in the bankruptcy of the subdivision's developer, leaving no one left to finish the neighborhood. Working with Metro Nashville, Habitat Greater Nashville purchased empty lots, added street lights and sidewalks, and paved roads. Edison Park now has new life, with Habitat homeowners already moving into 17 completed homes.
Habitat San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley is partnering with the California Department of Veterans Affairs to build two neighborhoods for military veterans. Part of the affiliate's "Habitat for Heroes" program, the communities in Santa Clarita Valley and Sylmar will have community gardens, playgrounds, environmentally friendly homes and access to Veterans Affairs representatives. The project also includes home renovations serving the area's veterans.
