A dream come true

Chamna Ali and his wife Bas Gul lived for more than a year in a cramped basement in Aliabad, Afghanistan, with nine other people. It’s a living situation that their granddaughters — 2-year-old Sumayah and 8-year-old Safia, above — won’t have to face, thanks to Habitat.

Chamna completed construction on his Habitat house in 2007, one of 156 homes built in this community between 2004 and 2008. “It was very hard for us to live with two families in one small room,” Chamna says. “Still, even now, it is hard for us believe that we finally have a house we can call our own.”

The Habitat house has two rooms and twice the area of the basement.

“I could never anticipate we could ever own a house such as this,” Chamna says, “So I can say our dream did come true.”
